Oprah Hearts Eckhart

Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. So be as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves. Matthew 10:16

Are you paying attention to the object of Oprah's latest infatuation? Let me tell you my story about why you should.

For months, a rather bedraggled, rambling old man visited the coffee bar/cafe in the building where I work. Lester looked for ways to intercept people, especially employees, to animatedly discuss esoteric new-age philosophies. I learned a lot from Lester. Yes, I learned to peek around the corner to see if the coast was clear before going to the restroom or I would be waylaid for 20 minutes.

Lester relished any chance to persuade people that their troubles, in fact, all the world's troubles, were direct results of not being in "The Now." He meant well.

I remember once telling Lester that my boss would appreciate it if I spent more "now" time doing the work I was being paid to do rather than talking about "The Now." He didn't get me. He offered to set my boss straight. I adamantly discouraged him.

I brushed off Lester's meandering lectures as the fallout of a disturbed, lonely, but intelligent old man. I wasn't without compassion, but honestly, I was frustrated that he was boldly proselytizing at a Christian church, or at the very least, carrying on a one-sided debate.

Then I learned about Eckhart Tolle. I realize now that Lester was regurgitating Eckhart Tolle's words. Lester sincerely, deeply, believes in Eckhart Tolle. A wolf has gotten to Lester the lamb, and I am angry.

Oprah hearts Eckhart Tolle, as she has Deepok Chopra and Rhonda Byrne in the past (which, by the way, doesn't really exist according to Tolle--the past is a trace of a moment that was actually "The Now" at one point. I just realized that John Lennon wrote "Yesterday" for nothing--he just needed to hop into "The Now" and get over his funk.) Oprah has read Tolle's books over and over and keeps them on her nightstand. She is literally a disciple.

Want to be shrewd as serpents? Google Eckhart Tolle and learn about how you can be spiritually awakened. Read this USA Today article on Oprah and Eckhart Tolle's book, The New Earth. Learn about Oprah's 10-week live on-line class (webinar) explicating Tolle's teachings line by line. Become enlightened about Eckhart Tolle.

Later this month I have another post that will speak to this phenomenon, but I'm saving it for March 26th for a reason.

Here's an excerpt from A New Earth by Tolle:

So when you are alert and contemplate a flower, crystal,
or bird without naming it mentally, it becomes a window
for you into the formless. There is an inner opening, however
slight, into the realm of spirit. This is why these three
“en-lightened” life-forms have played such an important
part in the evolution of human consciousness since ancient
times; why, for example, the jewel in the lotus flower is a
central symbol of Buddhism and a white bird, the dove,
signifies the Holy Spirit in Christianity. They have been
preparing the ground for a more profound shift in planetary
consciousness that is destined to take place in the human
species. This is the spiritual awakening that we are beginning
to witness now.

Good for you, Linda! It is unfortunate that so many people will read this book and take the class just because Oprah says so. Whenever we play those ice breaker games that ask which famous person you would like to have lunch with, I usually pick Oprah, not for the reason people usually assume - that I just LOVE her and want to be her BFF, but because I would love to talk to he about her belief system. She grew up in church and has heard the truth. She says she has a Bible on her nightstand, too. Anyway, all this to say thanks for telling it like it is - even about Oprah's new favorite thing! ~Carol (i throw like a girl)

I agree with Carol,,I was sent am email on these to be aware about Oprah new age belief system and that you can read them on line and take classes. It says in the last days people will be lover's of them self's"
I don't want to pass judement but beware you are not taken in by these I am glad Linda you wrote about these on your blog!!

It's just so sad how many people are going to be sucked in to this just because Oprah is espousing it.

It's really scary how much influence Oprah has on the culture. How many millions of Americans will be introduced to this new age philosophy b/c of Oprah?

Jenny said...

It is so so true, and so so frightening. So many people, Christians too, heart Oprah. Thanks for your thoughts on all of this, we need to be aware so we have an answer to give. Thanks for the heads-up.

I too got an email and looked at this stuff on her website and on Amazon. Reminds me of 2 Timothy 4:3 - For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

Thanks for boldly sounding the truth about this.

Let's see if I get this. If I contemplate a flower, a crystal or a bird without mentally naming it, it's a window into the formless. If I contemplate Eckhart Tolle, Lester and Oprah without naming them, will it be a window into the mindless? Oh, but I have to be a lert. The world needs more lerts I'm sure, but I don't think I'm one of them!

Sounds like a big hot steaming plate full of crap to me.

I was just talking about this with some friends this morning. We were disturbed at how Oprah talks a lot of Christian talk with whole lot of "universe" thrown in with it. What a confusing mess for a baby believer. The other commenters are right, so many people blindly follow whatever Oprah says.

Things that make you go hmmmm!

I had actually read an article already about this...to tell you the truth, it does not surprise me, although it does sadden me, because she has such a platform.

Between this and O-BLAH-ma...should prove to be an interesting year!

Downright scary, isn't it? Oprah has way too much influence and there are so many that are seeking and easily influenced. Such easy prey for Satan's false teaching.

annie's eyes said...

Thanks Linda for the truth exposed to take heed lest we fall. Oprah's influential power scares the daylights out of me.

Linda said...

D2, tell us how you really feel!

Ruthie said...

I had no idea.... I'm not a big Oprah watcher, but I agree, she does have a huge fan base. Thanks for the heads up!

Nicki said...

This is so frightening but also a great reminder that as Christians we now need to be bolder than ever! I know many, many, many Christian women, including myself who watch Oprah from time to time. But, I realize that even though I only watch her "informational" shows, I probably shouldn't be watching at all due to what she stands for. Thanks for sharing this! And I'm glad you are going to She Speaks too!!

In the immortal words of Ray Ramono "What a bunch of BALONEY!!!" Thanks for the post Linda, this is exactly one reason I gave you an award at my blog!
P.S. I'm so glad I'm not enlightened!

Preach it sister! I am worried sick about all this "junk" that is being thrown at us. But I have to remember that Jesus promised the very gates of hell itself would not prevail against His church. I look forward with anticipation to see what else you have to say about all this on the 26th.

Once, a woman who had attended our church and had been missing for awhile, told me that she was just fine - she was watching Oprah and that was her church. Sad.

Linda---this is great that you have put this out there today to make us all aware..."keep our eyes open"! I work---and whether I did or not..I am not an Oprah fan. She may have done some good things--but I've heard that even snake meat tastes like fried chicken if you do it right....(not that I've eaten any snake...I'm just sayin')
;)--However, it is critical taht we are ever watching ---ever the observant Christians---ever determined to get the truth told--follow hard after Christ Jesus.

Well, I think that passage would be profound indeed if I could understand a word of it :) I like a lot of things about Oprah, but not everything. No matter what one's opinion, it's always good to make up your own mind. Interesting post!

New Age is just another word for nonsense. An excuse for people to do yoga, sip herbal tea and feel good about themselves for what they are doing for "Mother" earth.

Thanks, Linda, for the candidness!!

all I can say is... wow....

"Heavenly Father, I come to You, to give thanks for the truth that You have revealed through the Holy Spirit. For the truth of what Your Son, my Lord, Jesus Christ has accomplished. I come before You to ask that send forth the Holy Spirit to Your children. Teach us how to respond... teach us how to be as 'shrewd as snakes and as harmless as doves'. Lord, help us to study Your Word so completely, that when falsehoods rear their ugly head, we have eyes to see it, and thus avoid it. Lord, I would also ask that you help us to train our tongues so that we may be ready with a gentle reply. Father I ask this in the name of Your Son, my Lord Jesus' name, Amen"

Well we know John Lennon never got it...while he was worrying about his Yesterdays he was also busy trying not to Imagine his future....but that's really not the point here. (Besides I think Paul McCartney wrote Yesterday.)

Oprah is not just financially powerful, she is powerful because of her ability to reach so many people with no Biblical background and a taste for whatever spiritual fodder comes along....really, she's out on a limb with Shirley McClain and Lester and Eckhardt.

Cyndy said...

P.S. I had a brain wave this morning to write something about Oprah, not related to this particular issue, if it's alright I'm going to link folks back here to you for an example of what I mean.
BTW - is this the controversial post?

Linda said...

Cyndy, thank you for the correction regarding the song, and thanks for the link. And no, this is not the controversial post, unfortunately.

I heart DeeDee's comment above and wholeheartedly agree. I don't heart Oprah. Or her minions.

Sad that a woman with so much influence can use it in the wrong way. Is there not anyone in her corner bold enough to say, What are you doing??? May be that she'll just have to wait to be confronted on the day that all knees will bow & tongues confess that JESUS CHRIST is Lord!!!
C'mon O we already know from your magazine covers who you love.
Great post Linda!
Love ya,
P.S. I'm going to She Speaks!!! Can't wait to meet you!

The Preacher's Wife said...

Can anyone say "Wh*re of Babylon?"

I know lots of people - Christian people?- love her show but she literally makes my skin crawl.

I didn't read all the comments so it may have already been mentioned, but she also has a 365-day course on her satellite show about the New Age Jesus..

This woman is much more dangerous than we give her credit and if I hear one more of my church friends say what a good Christian she is just because she happens to quote a scripture from time to time I'm going to go stark raving mad.

Okay, I'm done now. :)

*breathing deeply*

I posted on this very subject last week. Oprah is a deceiver of the worst kind - she comes as an angel of light. She is known for being generous while she is spreading (again) the new-age message of being in the 'now'. What the heck is being in the 'now' anyway? Arent we all in the now? If we werent we would be in the later or in the earlier........makes no sense to a pragmatist like me ;-) hahahahah

Lynne said...

Thanks so much for this important post. I agree with "the preacher's wife" that Oprah is much more dangerous than we give her credit for. I also cringe when I hear other Christians quoting her and talking about watching her show on a daily basis.

Jenny said...

It is sad to me how she has changed as the years have gone by. She seems to be going further and further away! I try to remember to pray for her when something on her show makes me "upset". If she had a change of heart, she could impact alot of people, that's an understatement I guess. Satan I'm sure has a huge amount of effort in keeping her blinded but she could see the light! If she does, I want to know that I was part of the behind the scenes prayer's for her!

My 16 year old son came in from school talking about how Oprah was misleading people and encouraging them to read a book that would probably only confuse them! This makes me so thankful for all the years we have sacrificed having him in a private, Christian school. What an incredible compliment to Godly parenting!

Great post, Linda.

this is a great post for passing on this information. I always get saddened by her newest and latest bandwagon that she jumps on and gets started.

This is one of the reasons I do not heart Oprah.

Queen B said...

Thanks for posting on this. It is such a shame that she is misleading millions.

I agree with the others that she is dangerous. She knows just enough to completely confuse searching people. A friend and I were just discussing how she has ruined the word "spiritual". Its meaning is so worldly because of her misuse.

Thanks for talking about this Linda, I tackled this one the other day too!

I certainly am concerned over this belief system that Oprah is preaching- so many follow her without question. When I received the email warning last week, I was convicted to pray for her. She could do great things for the Lord if she knew the real "Light".
