Fal Into Flavor, Week 4: Football Favs
*EDIT* It has been graciously brought to my attention that there apear to be approximately 556 spelling errors in this post. Now, these so called "errors" are all merely a game I made up just for you readers called, 'Can you count how tired I am after spending a weekend with five teenaged girls?" Have fun with it.*
Y'all are not disappointing me in the butter/cream cheese department. Let's not "drop the ball" this week in our never-ending quest for the perfect comfort dish with which to morph ourselves and families into human Butterballs before Turkey Day.
You do not have to go with this theme, but today, I am offering Football Finger Foods, in honor of the Indianapolis Colts, 2007 Super Bowl Champs. (This season? 3-3.) So, three cheers and three appetizery foods this week:
"Poor Boys"
1 lb. fried, drained hamburger
1 lb. friend, drained sausage
1 lb. Velveeta, cubed, added to combined meats until melted.
1 t. Worcestershire sauce, added to all of the above
1 loaf "cocktail" bread
Pre-heat 350*. Line cookie sheet with foil. Place approximately 2 T. of mix on bread slices lined up on foil. Bake about 10 mins. or until lightly browned.
***
Cheesy Buffalo Chicken Dip
1 8 oz. brick of cream cheese
1/2 c. bleu cheese salad dressing
1/2 c. red hot wing sauce
1/2 c. crumbled bleu cheese or mozz.
2 c. cooked shredded chicken
Oven: 350*. Soften cream cheese in pie plate in microwave. Whisk in dressing, sauce, cheese, until smooth. Add chicken and stir well. Bake 20 mins. or until heated through. Stir before serving.
***
My Favorite Guacamole
4 very ripe avocados, peeled, mashed.
1 t. salt
4 t. lemon juice
1 t. chili powder
3 T. chopped onion
Chopped tomatoes (2 sm. Romas) OR 1/2 can well-drained diced.
Mix all. Cover. Refrigerate at least one hour.
*Tip* You can place one avocado pit in guac to prevent from turning brown. Remove before serving, unless you can make sure that your mortal enemy in the crowd who is rooting for the other team "accidentally" gets the pit.
OK-what do you have for us this week?! Also--if you have made any of the Fall Into Flavor dishes, will you tell us about them in the comments today? Thanks!

I actually have an avocado on hand right now and will be trying your guacamole recipe. That actually sounds pretty good for breakfast...
The other recipes will have to wait until I have a chance to get to the Wal-Mart in Cordoba and see if I can buy some of the ingredients not available locally. Not real hopeful about the hot sauce for chicken wings. Argentines aren't big fans of the hot and spicy. BUT Wal-Mart has a pretty decent selection of imported specialty foods so if anyone will have it, they will.
Otherwise Lid, you'll have to make and eat some on my behalf. I know it will be a hardship, but that's what friends are for!
Mel and I LOVE making Rotel Dip for SuperBowl Sunday!
LOL - Linda, we had similar thoughts today! I have the Buffalo Chicken Casserole listed! Since great minds think alike - we MUST have great minds!
I love getting new recipes, especially this time of year!
The soup I linked to is from Southern Living & our family just LOVED it! Perfect on a cold night.
Linda, thanks for the great appetizer recipes.... I don't have many good ones & these look great!
With food like that I might even become a football fan! Those are some big time butterball making yums!
This is so fun! Everything sounds sooo good!
YES! Yum! That all sounds so incredibly delicious.
To Kim above, avocados and guacamole DO make fabulous editions to breakfst, IMHO. Scrambled eggs w/ guacamole. mmmm....
Thanks for the recipes!
Linda! You've posted some of my absolute FAVS!!! YUM! And thank you thank you thank you for the avocado pit tip! (a mirror phrase!) I never knew that!
Now...GO COLTS!!!!
(I have no idea what I'll post today, but I promise to post SOMEthing. :) )
Blessings!
Kim
I could almost do football if we ate like this. Guacamole is relly good for you, too, (without the chips, I guess.) All sound really good. And I have to confess--mostly I'm a chef wannabe. I especially will be trying the soup recipes that I've printed out when we finally get the cool weather that fall is supposed to look like. Thanks for sponsoring this meme, too. It is great to see what's cooking in other kitchens.
How do you make sausage out of your friend? :-)
Just helping you wake up on this Monday morning! LOL
And is "fried" what we call "browned" down here in the South? Or do you add something to it first, like breading?!
Nothing better than fresh guac, but I never can find any decent avocados and there's a company here in Texas that makes GREAT guac and sells it in the grocery stores, so I don't even try anymore.
It has been graciously pointed out to me by an anonymous FRIEND that I have a "1 FRIEND, drained sausage" in my recipe. So the keen wit of this certain reader brought up the question, "And how do you make a sausage out of your friend?" (snicker, snicker,Haha,MochawithLinda.) Well, Lid, that's the SECRET part of the recipe. meanwhile, I'm leaving the typo because I think it's funny.
Also, this same high-maintenance friend wants to know if I mean "browned" instead of breaded and fried. Yes. Whatever.
Well, if I was REALLY "high-maintenance" as you say, I would have also pointed out your title that says that this week we FAL into Flavor. But if you change it it will mess up my link.
And with that, I'll put a Lid on it!
ALL RIGHT, PEOPLE. I have had a LOOOOONG weekend with five, count 'em, FIVE, teenaged girls and one Jorge. I am TIRED!
It has also been graiously pointed out that I apparently "misspelled" "Fall" in my title as "Fal." Oh you naive people. "Fall" is so yesterday. The new, hip, way to spell it is "Fal."
I'm so glad you stopped by my blog. Your blog header is great. I love making new blogging friends and finding new recipes! I have a family funny posted now. Check it out!
I think instead of "Poor Boys" they should be called "Man Food."
BTW, I looked at my husband yesterday and said "I guess I know what you'll be doing Monday night, right?" No meetings at church. No people to visit. The Colts are playing, and all of life comes to a screeching halt.
Go Colts!

Just wanted to say thanks for my new jewelry. Because after my husband tastes that Buffalo Chicken Dip he will buy me diamonds. Well, maybe not diamonds, but he'll REALLY love this dip.
The thing about spellchecker is that it doesn't catch your "Friend" sausage. We need a brain checker for that. LOL!
Love the recipes. I forever have typos in my posts, and my husband emails me all the mistakes. Isn't that sweet? Or not?
I am thinking that I would gain 50 more lbs if you were my neighbor. I love the chicken recipe.
Yum! Do you know where "Po' Boys" originated? In the South ... Louisiana, if I'm not mistaken. They were originally called "poor boys" because it is what the families would serve the workers in the fields when they came in from lunch. But, they didn't have much meat and stuff on them. They were very limited on what was actually in the sandwich. They would stay outside and eat them on the porch. I'm gonna research this and get back with you. It's kinda interesting. Maybe. If you have nothing better to do. I'll get right on that history of the po' boy sandwich and get back to you.
Hi Linda:
Sorry I missed the last two weeks, I'm trying to catch up on all the good recipes. Po'boys, as we say down south, are one of my favorites. Interested in seeing watch Bayou Belle finds out about the history. One thing for sure, you're always fat and happy after eating one.
Forgot to tell you we're "transplant" Colt fans due to growing up watching Peyton's daddy play for the Saints. And we cheer for Eli and the Giants, too. Have a good one!
Love finger foods. Have a great week!
Well, Lidna, from FAL into Flavor, I shall waddle out to my kitchen and make those recipes posthaste. My mouth is watering, my tummy is rumbling, I'm ready for some comfort food. I don't "do" football...but I "do" food!! :)
These recipes sound just wonderful. I have made variations of them before, but will be trying these as well. Maybe even Friday night when I'm hosting our Halloween party.
Hugs,
Susan
Hey Miss Linda you are my lucky Apple Butter winner! Congrats!
If you send me your address I will pop that in the mail to you!

If you want to take Buffalo Chicken Dip to a football tailgate you can actually make it ahead of time and put it in heavy disposable foil pan. When you get to the tailgate place the pan on grill and heat dip until hot and bubbly---that way no one has to eat cold dip! I actually work with Swanson Chicken and we make Buffalo Chicken Dip using two cans of their white meat chicken which makes it really easy (no cooking and shredding). Also you can sub in ranch dressing for the bleu cheese dressing if you're not a bleu cheese fan.
