The Bachelorette and the Subject of Hugs

Excuse the kitschy clip art. I'm feelin' a bit emotional right now, sniff.

Remember this song by Pete Seeger:

Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the flowers gone?
Girls have picked them every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

Well, not to whine, but I'm hearing:

Where have all the readers gone?
Long time passing
Maybe out frolicking on their lawns
When will they ever return?

Dude, I don't know about you, but I'm hearing echoes around 2nd Cup. Oh well. That's never stopped me before. I just keep on keepin' on. So if you're a little lonely in the comments section, too, let us just have a big ol' group hug. OK, that's over.

Speaking of hugs.

Question: Why on "The Bachelor" and "Bachelorette" and "Wife Swap" do women run up to the guy and straddle jump him? Once you've seen this about 100 times, and I would think once you've greeted him that way 100 times, it kind of loses its spontaneous, flirty aspect. Thank goodness they're all size 2's, too.

I just wonder if those guys start thinking, "Ohhhh, here she comes! Get ready ... get set ... here she comes ... plant my feet and ... WOMP!" "I made it! I'm still standing!" It's like WWF hugging. You'd think they were returning from war or something. It's the new nonverbal cliche: the jump-hug.

I'm thinking the technique probably takes practice.

It just happens that Jorge is traveling on business this week. Perhaps I should practice up the jump hug on the walnut tree in the back yard for when he returns.

Uh, No!
Not serious!
JK, Jorge!

So what did you think of The Bachelorette finale?

Did Reid's return surprise you? I'm glad she didn't choose him. He looks like he's about 16.

And didn't ya just love the "bleep" Jillian gave us before Ed turned up? Hi-Klass.

It's kind of ironic that the Cymbalta commercial came on right after Jillian spent 15 minutes of air time crying. Heck yeah, "Depression hurts." So does reality TV.

And did you notice that Jillian awkwardly jump-hugged Ed during at her proposal? That's hard to do in a formal. But it wouldn't be The Bachelorette without the jump-hug. Good grief.

I have cobwebs in my comments.

Question- Has anyone ever seen a jump hug in real life?

Debbie @Like a Rose said...

Definitely pretty quiet in blogland. Not much commenting going on, let alone jump hugs.

Here is the first ( HUG ) for the group hug. Hope you get lots more.

I don't watch the Bachelette, can't spell it either and I'm to lazy to spell check it.

Readers are gone. They are enjoying life sans the blog.

I know I don't spend the time here that I should and sometimes am struggling get anything out,.

Have a Great Day!

I've been reading, just not commenting...sorry you've been lonely! :)

I sheepishly admit that I watched "The Bachelorette" and every week I ask myself why I wasted that 2 hours of my life. And yet every week I'm right back in front of the television. Do I not have enough drama in my own life that I have to get it through "reality" TV? My husband was so excited that the finale was on last night so he can have his wife again on Monday nights.

I also have to admit that I (out loud) said "Pick him, pick him!" when Reid was on his knees. I love Reid and if I weren't old enough to be his mother, already married, and a few other factors I'd move to Philly.

Thank you for posting this. At least now I know I'm not the only fairly sane mother-of-grown-kids-who-really-has-better-things-to-do that watches. :)

Well, I missed the part with Ed...I saw Reid and I thought "what is this"? Never liked him anyway....sort of thought she would choose Kipten....(or however he spelled his name!)

So, I guess I'll have to wait to see the end results on "The Final Rose" thingy....

Oh, and about the comments....well, I'm feeling the blues, too!!!

LOL!!! Love the jump hug.

My thought is that people are out doors while it's nice out, knowing they'll have 6 mo of sub-zero weather when they can catch up on months of blog readings.

unless you're like me and find you have absolutely nothing interesting to write on my blog about, and therefore there's nothing to comment on. Hopefully with the cold comes some brain power. :P

Oh and I don't watch the bachelor, but I have a feeling my hubs would jump out of the way and let me fall to the ground if I came running at him for that kind of a hug.

I also noticed the Cymbalta commercial! I thought that was kind of a telling of who the show is really geared toward. Maybe depressed, lonely, single women. But. . . I have to confess, I watched it too. Yeah, I agree with you. I was surprised that she bleeped such a nasty word! Yep, high class!

Sara said...

Hi Linda,

I'm a new reader, just haven't commented yet. Actually, I almost commented yesterday about your chili recipe. I was thinking a chili cook-off would be a good way to kick off fall and the football season in our office. See? You are influential and you didn't even know it! *Hugs* from Central California!

I am SO glad she picked ED!!!!! LOVE him!

I've been hearing echoes, too. I'm glad it's not just me. Maybe everyone is too hot to say anything. (And yes, both definitions of hot could apply.)

the picture hugging the tree....too funny!!!

I watched the finale with my daughter last night..had not seen any other episodes.....just plain silly. She kept saying, but mom you need to have watched it before...nope, not gonna do it!

The Bug said...

I don't watch the show - we always have baseball on in the evenings (well, & to be honest, I really can't get into "reality" tv very much). But the jump hug sounds hilarious. I particularly liked the pic of the person hugging the tree - too funny!

Glad to know I'm not the only one lacking in comment love these days. I thought it was something I said.

Jump hugged my husband one time. He grunted. Pretty sure that's not supposed to happen.

I read your blog first thing EVERY morning...but don't have a blog myself and rarely leave comments to bloggers. Sorry. I will try to do better.

In regard to the silly Bachelorette show and finale last night. I was surprised that they allowed Reid to come back after SHE had made the decision to send him home. (If they start allowing all contestants to do that on future shows, oh my.) I also thought he was dressed like a 17 yr. old. Kind of sloppy. I myself would have been attracted to someone that looked and acted more like Kypton, having grown up in San Diego. Ed seemed like a nice enough guy, but lost my favor when he first came out in the green swim trunks and started to regularly wear tank tops.

I try not to care about any of it and realize that the actual reality of any of these couples making it a lifetime is pretty small. I mean, what is it, like 2 out of the 18 Bachelor/Bachelorette's have stayed together....so, life goes on. At least until the next show.

i've been 'dusting' over here, too!
Everyone's sueezing out their last few days of summer breezes, I think. I'm resting from a busy campmeeting week and ready-ing dd for a neworleans mission trip. Doesn't 100+* weather and 100% humidity sound like fun for physical labor?! They'll get a real taste of true service and I'm eager to hear their 'awakenings' after they come home.
Didn't get to see Bachelorette...I've been reading each night.
May you get enough 'wading' commenters to keep you from drowning in 'Lake Abandoned' :)

Kay said...

Yep... it's the summertime bla's as far as the comments go.

I've noticed the hug stuff too... I've only seen the end of Wife Swap a couple of times and I think it just looks so dumb. I keep waiting on one of those guys to just fall flat over! LOL

HUGS to you! (not THAT kind LOL)

I will attribute my low number of comments to still being a 'baby-blogger'. I will use that excuse for as long as I can.

Out of the 3, I think my vote was for Kiptyn. I was not shocked though. The internet leaks too many secrets. Not that I watch the show or anything... ;)

Dawn said...

Last night was the only time I've watched the Bachelorette show. I truly don't get it. Like it's supposed to be a REALITY show, right?

Comments from the peanut gallery (aka, my kids) -

Daughter: (Regarding Reid) Oh, yah... he's classy. Coming back to declare his undying love and propose to her looking like THAT?!

Both kids: (Regarding the bleeped word before the final selection.) Son: Nice. Daughter: Klassy. With a K.

Me: Now THAT's a girl any mama would be proud to have her son bring home. (Not.)

Brenda said...

Whew! I thought it was just me on the jump hugs. I am always jealous because I KNOW hubby would need to be prepared (maybe lift for a few days prior), plant those feet and then go through physical therapy and psychological recovery if I tried it. Still . . . if this diet works . . . I can dream.

Kim said...

It's summer and everyone is at the pool I think.

But since I'm in the middle of winter, I will always stop by and I'll try to do better at commenting too. Sometimes my computer connection is sooooooo sloooooow that it's all I can do to read blogs, never mind trying to comment. But hey, any internet connection is better than NO CONNECTION AT ALL. Right?!

Have never watched these shows but sounds like this jump hug thing is beyond awkward. And forget the practicing with the tree, Lid, 'cause you'll just end up with a bad forehead rash. I think we should leave those jump hugs to our childrens' generation. LOL

Hello hello hello hello, echo echo echo echo. Its a ghost town in blogland I tell you. What's up with that. I am here though and that is all that matters.
I got a little tear with that song too. :)

Chatty Kelly said...

My readership has dropped too. Blogging is so yesterday. Everone is twittering now. (wink).

Mama Belle said...

Heck, no, I don't remember that song. How old do you think I am?

And, I have personally never done the jump hug. I would be afraid to knock someone down. I think you have to be prepared for that ... at least the jumpee does. You should totally greet hubs with it ... and could you get it on video please?

Merrie said...

LOL... I can't imagine the jump hug being romantic... like a "hicky"... never ever got one in a passionate moment!
The the blogging/commenting/reading thing is slow. Don't know if it is Facebook's fault (one of my excuses), or busy and on vacation (1/2 of my excuse... no vacation), or can't focus and concentrate (my #1 excuse)... or just lazy (yeah, another of my excuses)... just reading and not commenting (very guilty).
I'll do better...hopefully!

You crack me up as usual... I watched every episode and ..... It was the best bachelorette EVER...

Jump hug and all.... I was rooting for Jake. Hope they pick him for the next bachelor..

Love you girl. Love your new look around here too. BIG hugs.

Oh honey - - - I make comment #26 on this post alone - - - your blog is positively HOPPIN' compared to mine!!!

Not sure what happened - - - last year at this time my blog visit numbers soared, this year they are rapidly declining.

Must be global warming.

I'm lucky to get 2 comments on a post. . .and unfortunately, I've been gone for two weeks and am leaving again tomorrow. . .thus the "cobwebs" over at Melanie's. :) We don't get t.v. anymore since we moved. . .too far out in the country and refuse to pay for a dish. . .
Your comments box is placed such (on my computer screen) that Mick Jaggeri s looking longinly at me. Blech!!!!

Mel said...

I will admit i have not had time to comment very often and i think it must be a summer time thing because it is happening at the ole home blog too...

jump-hugging that is one of those things were what happens if you miss?? or if the person moves??

Angie said...

Look at all the comments! I might have to ask for a hug sometime too. It's a lonely world out there sometime!

Don't watch much TV, but I love your commentary on what you watch.

Paula (SweetPea) said...

Yes, the numbers are low...I would suspect out pulling the lawn.

I hadn't notice the Cymbalta after Jillian's emotional break down.

I think she made the right choice. Reid didn't seem her type. Kipton was hunky and all but I just don't know if he wouldn't made the long haul like she wanted. I kept thinking anyone of those guys could succomb to propose and confessing love but who's to say they not run like her past beaus (obviously the left or she'd not be on the show, right? well let's ask the geeky, ego-trippin Wes). I hope she got her dream and she seemed very desiring of it.

Yep, wouldn't that be nice to 1) be a size 2) be ablel to jump-hug a guy 3) do it all in a formal that drug the floor. I tripped up the stairs on my wedding dress because the dress barely nipped at my shoes.

Though the bleep was not graceful it was kind of funny what she said...not the cuss word but her statement about him not messing up.

Connie said...

I do watch the Bachelorette and I know it is silly but they at least aren't killing eachother. I am glad she picked Ed. Hope it lasts.
I'm new to blogging and enjoy your blog.

Susanne said...

So sorry you've been lonely. Your spilling over with comments today I see. Must be the jump hug topic. I don't watch Bachelorette at all but right now I'm into So You Think You Can Dance and they do that on there too when they make it to the next round. Your "planting the feet" observation made me laugh out loud. Too funny.

2Thinks said...

How could you be lonely over there, your comment section is always overflowin'. Look at it now- 30-something big number comments. :)

Me? I've been too busy cooking for all my aunts, uncles and cousins and will be outa here and not blogging for the weekend.

I remember the song. Long time ago.. Where do you find those pictures anyway? No Bachelorette over here, t.v.'s off for the summer.

Enjoy your weekend, don't hurt yourself practicing the jump hug on the tree. Ouch!

Just catching up on reading some blogs...I've been moving (still am actually...may never get unpacked) so I read in bunches but just haven't had a lot of commenting time...I figure by Sept. things will get back to 'normal' in blogland.

My tv/dvd player will finally be connected on Saturday so I'm starting the 30 day shred next week...I've been walking everyday in my neighborhood which is like climbing Everest every morning so I think I'm ready.

Have a great day!

hello...anyone there? Who turned the light out? I'm actually thinking of changing over to wordpress, so I'm not very active on my own little blog right now.

Never given a jump hug...I don't want to be responsible for hurting anyone. I agree, good thing those girls are all size 2.

Gave up on the bachelor shows a long time ago. It's like a harem on steroids.

Gwendolyn said...

This is the first season ever that I have not watched "The Bachelorette" and I keep waiting to miss it. I think I gave it up because my children kept wandering in, and I just didn't want to explain the insanity, ya know? But I like reading about it...that way I can get my fix without traumatizing the children. LOL

Also...the no comment thing. Sigh. I have the blog blahs. Can't blog...can only read a few blogs without remembering that I really should be mopping my kitchen. I'm thinking it's a summer thing. I hope so, anyway.

I found you via Day by Day....very funny stuff. Husband just got laid off and I needed to smile.

Rachelle said...

LMAO!! I was totally over the jump hug too! And why did she always intertwine her fingers when she did the stangind hug. Like she couldn't possibly hold up her arms for that long, so she had to hold onto them while she graced you with her presense. I can't imagine what comes AFTER the jump hug. Like when she is SUPER excited to see Ed and not just glad she gets to meet "the Faulkers." And the high pitch squeal is annoying too. I could go on and on as well, yet I too sat and watched the show in it's entirety. And the after the rose. and probably the next bachelor. Gluttony.

The Davidson Den said...

Oh, me too, Linda. But I've pretty much been on a blogging hiatus, so it wouldn't surprise me if my own husband has stopped reading my blog at this point. I just can't seem to get it together. (Anything, really.) But since you mentioned the comments, I'm givin' you some. You always make me laugh. :)
