Even Zoo Animals Need Blankies and Hot Chocolate

Arctic blasts, lake snow effects, frigid temps--many parts of the country are being affected by the latest winter havoc, but who would've thought the Miami zoo would have to go to such extreme response measures as giving animals blankets and hot chocolate.

Yes, it's a video of a very excited, animated zoo keeper talking about keeping the animals warm. Cracks me up. I'm trying to remember the last time I was this into anything. Maybe the day Clinton Kelly emailed me. Or maybe it was yesterday when I accidentally got some caffeinated coffee at staff meeting. Good fun.

Awwww, that zoo keeper is meant to do that work. He's probably been there for years and the animals still tickle him! That was refreshing to see!

Well, after they get the lions, tigers and bears all snug...they can send extra blankets and hot chocolate my way. The weatherman said it's colder here than it's been in 12 years. BBBBRRRR!!!!

Stay warm and keep the coffee brewing.

That video is too cute!

Hope you are keeping warm where you are and drinking plenty of hot chocolate.

We are roasting over here (111.2F) while you are freezing. Mother Nature at it's best.

Take care and have a great weekend,

Tania

That is hilarious. So is the video that played right after it about the frozen cat.

Even down here we barely got above freezing yesterday, and that was just for about an hour. Right now it's in the teens here.

How nice to have zoo keepers who are so dedicated and love what they do! Oh, that we would all have the same passion for our jobs! Wouldn't it be nice if our trash collectors got so excited with what they were picking up... can't you just hear them around the table at night telling their kids about the "awesome trash pile I loaded on the truck today"... okay, so maybe not -

"SLLLURRRRPPPP!" haha. He was excited alright! I can't believe that monkey (primate thing) needed a blanket with all that fur, but okay. Fun times.

I remember when we lived in Miami. We went to that same zoo one day. It was a cold day for Miami... maybe 50's to low 60's. People were bundled up as if they were going out in the snow. We thought it was kinda funny.

We were in what we used to call parkas.

It's 17 here today. Cold for Georgia.... and the snow isn't melting at all. The thing about our snow here is that it's so mushy that it freezes together quickly. You think you are looking at snow, but it's actually ice underneath... Makes driving really dangerous! We onlly have about 1 1/2 inches but we still can't go anywhere because of the ice underneath. On the other hand, sledding has been awesome!!!

It's been a cold winter here. Don't know if the Calgary zoo animals get blankies or hot chocolate here. They're made of heartier stock, I guess. :vD

No joke, I read your post, watched the video, thought "how cute!" and went and made myself a mug of hot chocolate!

Have you heard at the Miami Zoo the iguanas are falling off the trees? Seriously, it is so cold they're going into stasis and losing their grip. I saw the CNN clip while at the car dealer on Friday and laughed out loud. I was promptly glared at by, I suspect, members of PETA. Then the newscaster said, "no iguanas were injured" so I continued to chuckle. A new reason for carrying an umbrella!

My husband says the coldest he's ever been in his life was when he was at Homestead AFB (Miami) doing survival training. And this is a guy who has been stationed in Korea and all over. It's just that no one has heat and no one is USED to it being cold in Miami!

I guess it's all a matter of perspective!
