Ice, Ice Baby

So I've got this monkey on my back. And it's got icy cold fingers.

I'm not a coffee snob, and I am a tightwad, so I don't do Starbucks that often, or even fancy coffees that often. So yeah, I'll admit right here, that lately I have been indulging in McDonald's iced cofee. Did I say "indulging?" It's more like bathing in it. If the depth of my depavity is measured in frequency of indulgence, then I am 100% evil.

I've been secretly doing this for a while--secretly because
1) My husband is an even tighter cheapskate than I am and
2) I work in a place with a coffee bar that needs the support of our employees (church staff). I have a "tab" there, if you know what I mean. The barista/manager is a close, personal friend, who I feel like I'm cheating on when I buy coffee elsewhere.

So you can see how tricky this new addiction is: It's like I'm cheating on two men I highly respect with "Ol' Slewfoot Joe."

Then I decided to check how decadent McDonald's iced coffee is. The stats are bad, people, really bad. Their equivalent of a venti is 280 calories.

In addition to that bad news, I have fallen upon review after review telling me what a sick puppy I am for drinking this low brow stuff. Like this one where people are claiming McDonald's iced coffee cramps them up, among other gastointestinal woes. Worse than that, it insults their Gucci-Coffee tastebuds.

But me? It's like I've fallen in love with the coffee equivalent of Marlon Brando in "On the Waterfront:" Bad, but, gooooood.

So I went to Starbucks today and ordered a grande iced coffee with skim milk and Splenda, just to see the difference.

Blech. It was NOT "a contendah."

And then, like someone givin' me a fat lip, I heard today that Mickey D's is dolin' out free iced coffees on Mondays! And I paid $2.41 for that Starbucks stuff today. This junkie's goin' back to her junk!

So have you tried McDonald's iced coffee? What do you think?

I don't really like coffee...but I love your interpretation of Mickey D's and Starbucks. Interesting.

Also NOT a coffee fan. . .but I think you should continue your affair. It sounds like it's a nice little diversion that is pretty much sinless.

I totally get what you are saying! McD's iced coffee is delicious...I'm guilty of having one almost every day this summer. As a meal substitute of course!

I am afraid I am not a fan of iced coffee at all. Just plain old decaf with non-dairy creamer for me -- I don't even like all the flavors. Sometimes I've felt like I'm missing out, but I figure it's saving e a lot of money. :-)

Okay,'ve pushed me over the edge now! I keep hearing how GOOD these coffees are, and although I am NOT a star-struck Starbucks junkie, I WAY am a coffee junkie!! I think Starbucks is entirely overated, but haven't been persuaded to try a coffee drink from the same place I buy my kids' happy meals...until now. =-D
and oh...BTW, great picture!

Funny...I just dumped Starbucks and I come to your blog and read all about it :)

Can your church barista fix you an iced coffee?

I didn't care for either of the iced coffees. Now, the Mickey D's sweet tea...THAT'S another story!

I try not to darken the doors of MacDonald's but you've convinced me. I'll go try it. We usually get our iced cappucino's at Tim Horton's. Very good there. 7-11 (a convenience store) has them this year too, but they're not good.

You should suggest to your friend to get a iced coffee machine. Then you wouldn't have to cheat. Maybe.

"Gucci-coffee tastebuds" cracked me up.

Wahahahahahaha... a dear friend of my beloved is a devote coffee drinker. I love the smell of freshly ground coffee, the smell of coffee brewing... but I just can't seem to enjoy drinking the stiff ?!?

I will pray for your struggle. May God reveal to you your real "true love". ;~)

Guilty too. Burger King has them too and I love them. I asked one day how they are made. It's got shake mix in it. How in the world can anything be bad if it has shake mix in it? Besides, it's way more affordable than Starbucks.

It's been great catching up on your blog again. We were on vacation too. I am so envious of your beach pictures, it looks like you guys had a blast.

Can't imagine drinking iced coffee but you make it sound worth trying. I love McDonald's "cuppa hot coffee" especially when I step up to the counter and say "senior coffee, please." They have the best coffee and call me silly but I've boycotted StarBucks since 9/11. I'm Violet in Texas and don't know how to blog and love reading this blog.

So happy to know I'm not the only one that has dove into the lake of iced coffees! I LOVE the McD's iced coffee!! My thoughts are, I don't smoke, drink or do any other addictive things, so what's a little caffeine? (even if it's daily!!) Enjoy!

Too funny! I am definitely a coffee snob or at least I really like my coffee to taste good. After spending too much money at coffee stands (we're in western WA - can you say coffee central) I've finally figured out how to make coffee at home taste "just right." I use a French Press and a milk frother but it's definitely worth every penny. :)

I haven't tried McD's iced coffee (not a fan of anything iced)....but I do like their plain hot coffee, better than Starbuck's plain hot coffee. I am pretty sure McDonald's coffee was rated very highly recently by Consumer Reports. So I suppose it makes sense that their coffee would be good iced?

My friend is part owner of many McDs and he was trying to convince me of the tastiness factor...

I'll have to try it, given your stirring endorsement. Of course living in the land of Tully's, Starbucks, Seattle's Best Coffee and umpteen latte shacks, it DOES feel a bit blastphemous... :)

I cannot drink plain old coffee but do love cafe mochas either hot or iced. Of course I prefer Panera's but I have found that Burger King's Iced Mocha Joe is really good. I tried McDonald's iced coffee and didn't like it. I think it is because I'm not a straight up coffee drinker. I have to have chocolate in mine. LOL! If you are a coffee drinker I'm sure they are wonderful. By the way - I think you should continue to get them. You deserve to have simple things that you enjoy!

Stopped by there the other day to break a $20 so I could pay for parking the next morning and I took it home and used that as an excuse to buy the new iced coffee. My DH - who is vehemently opposed to everything Mickey D's - proceeded to swipe it from me and sucked it down. I think it's a hit!

Yes! I love their iced coffee for the same reason as you...cheaper than SB! I get mine without the liquid sugar and add Splenda to it. FYI *evil grin* McDonald's is having FREE iced coffee Mondays! Don't know how long it has been going on or how long it is going to last. I just stumbled upon it this week.

Hey Linda poo-poo!
I am not a big coffee drinker so I am not a big fan of iced coffee and I too tried the McD's version of it (during the "free" season) and wasn't that impressed however....your blog makes me want to give it one more shot. If I become so inclined to drink coffee, I do enjoy mine with the new blueberry cobbler creamer. Totally Yummy!

However,if you ever want to blog about your un-dying love of Cran-Grape juice...I'm your girl!

I just LOOOVE the taste of all of the many flovers of Mickey Deez Iced coffee.... but EVERY time I get one it kills my tummy...horrible heartburn, cramps and yes (later) mucho poo poocho.

I love them but It's kinda like being in love with someone who kicks your butt after ya kiss them... everytime.
