Granddog

I have a granddog. Her name is Bailey. She is a Wheaten Terrier.

She belongs to this couple, my son, Jordan, and his girlfriend, Natalie:

When she grows up, she will look something like this:

Right now, she looks exactly like this:

It has been interesting seeing my son care for this baby puppy, including getting up in the middle of the night to take her out.

Zoe is not sure about her ... niece??

Not that she feels sorry for herself. {Sigh} But sometimes, she just feels as though she blends in with the background when Bailey's around. Actually, she does blend in with the background most of the time.

The new granddog is adorable, but Tiny Tater Tot is still number one in my heart.

Tall Grass or Game: Find the Doggie

Sometimes, our grass is long. Always, our dog is short. It's a good thing she knows how to swim.

Here she is helping Jorge straighten his drawers. See her?

I love this little dog. :)

Friday's Fave Five: Zoe Gets a New Bed and Toy--Giveaway!

Go see Susanne at Living to Tell the Storyfor the complete list!

1. The new toy. The princess bed fell apart, so we had to get another bed. This one came with a squeaky toy, so you can imagine the elation. But just in case you can't, there is a 30 second silent video of her playing with it that cracks me up. In her frenzy she throws it up onto the sofa where my daughters are lounging, reading and doing homework. I don't know what all the blue circles are on the video, unless they're her little angelic auras floating around her.

2. Starbuck's Cinnamon Dolce Syrup. My friend told me how to make an Apple Spice drink with this, and I am in heaven. This is the face of someone hopped up on Cinnamon Dolce.

3. Facebook. I'm still reconnecting with old high school friends, and it's a lot of fun. I "trained" my blog to jump right over and post on FB every time I post here. If you're on and we're not friends yet, friend me! Oh, yes, and Jorge finally jumped on board the book of faces, too. He is a loose cannon. Our kids are shaking in their boots.

4. Apron Giveaway! This is the first action shot I've ever taken of myself. Niiiice. Anyway, a friend at church makes these adorable aprons and donates the proceeds to a goodwill venture in Kazakhstan, where I have traveled twice. I'm giving this one away because it's so darn cute with its coffee theme and all! How can you win? Tune in Monday!

5. Song parody of Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire." I know it's not really a funny topic. I know that disease is really nothing to laugh at. And I'm a little concerned for my college student regarding H1N1. But I am a sucker for song parodies, and this is pretty cute and clever. It starts slow and goes on about three minutes too long, but my favorite line is "Don't blame me; I'm your little buddy." You might enjoy a couple of minutes of it, or your kids might. Or you might never come back here.

At any rate, go see Susanne, have a great weekend, and come back Monday to see how to win the apron!

Summertime, and the Livin' Ain't Easy--Summer Colds, Hot Flashes & Canine Antics

One reason summertime ain't easy right now is that I have a summer cold, which is completely ridiculous and unacceptable. I think this might be why I couldn't sleep the other night.

BTW, you know how I wrote about Zoe watching me and quoted Rockwell's "Somebody's Watching Me" shower lyrics? Well, within a couple of hours after that, I finished my shower, opened the shower door, and there she sat, staring up at me. It was a case of life imitating the art of my blog, I guess.

Back to the post: another reason it ain't easy is that the hot flashes are back. I had a few last year, and then "poof" they were gone, and now they're back. For those of you who haven't experienced it yet, I can tell you that is the weirdest sensation. I actually start feeling it in my legs first, and then it moves to my trunk and from there radiates enough heat that I could hold a marshmallow in my hand and organically, spontaneously toast it. But how ridiculous. Whoever heard of knees sweating before anything else on a body?

It's also not easy because my running is killing me. It's the heat. I just can't do it. So I try for early morning or late at night, and that's not working so well.

An odd thing happened the other day when I was running which has made running definitely less easy for me. I turned down a street that is not normally on my path, and all of a sudden, not one but two Great Danes started their WOOOFing at me, running until they reached the ends of their chains which jerked them back. Scared me to death. The owner just sat on her front porch, yakking away on her phone while I almost peed my pants.

But that's not the end of it. As soon as my Fight or Flight response settled down, I heard a dog approaching me quickly from the back. He was smaller, because nothing is bigger than a Great Dane, I guess, and he was NOT happy that I was on his turf. His owner was in her yard and watched me stop in my tracks and yell at him, "NO! Go HOME! NO!" while he just ran circles around me barking like a maniac, rabid thing.

So then I would walk a few steps, and he would go bonkers again. Then I'd stop, and he would run circles around me. All the while I'm yelling "No!" which has the same effect as if Jorge yelled "No!" as I reached my hand into a bowl of Peanut M&M's. This spectacle went on for years.

Finally, I turned around to the owner and in a fit of desperate incredulity yelled, "Are you going to come and get your dog??" Like, "Oh, come ON. What is wrong with you? Rescue me, Lady!"

And she replied, "I would if I could!"

???

So I fought this ankle biter all the way to the end of the block. I guess when I turned the corner I left his territory, and I'm sure he felt superior.

I cannot tell you how ANGRY I was at that moment. I wanted to say and do a sundry of mean things.

So I just started praying to calm down, and then I started hypothesizing about what "I would if I could" might mean.

"Perhaps she just had a round of chemo."
"Perhaps she has heart problems."
"Perhaps she is on house arrest."
"Perhaps the dog was initially chained up but he overpowered her, chained her up and ran like the wind."

I was just trying to think of anything to arouse forgiveness.

Also, this last week I have been learning a new software program at work. You can imagine how not fun this is.

Let me finish on one good note, though: My laundry room is almost complete! You will be shocked at what I ended up choosing. It is very "not me." Which can be a good thing.

Insomnia

It's 5:28 am, and I've been awake since 2:00 due to mid-life hormonal power surges and the persistent snore next to me.

So I got up and wrote a draft for Internet Cafe.

Zoe is looking at me. She is quite confused. "This isn't in the routine," is what she is thinking, only in dog language.

She is constantly looking at me. Even when I clean the glass in the front door:

Yes, that is a "Yorkie border" that she is peeking over, designed to keep her from the front part of the house because she is not trustworthy at all, if you know what I mean.

Anyway, her constant observation of me reminds me of Rockwell's "Somebody's Watching Me," circa 1984.

When I'm in the shower
I'm afraid to wash my hair
'Cause I might open my eyes
And find someone standing there ....

Friday's Fave Five: Zoe Style

Thanks for hosting this, Susanne at Living to Tell the Story

As you know, I've been on my own a lot this week. But I had this little thing to keep me company, when she wasn't sulking about Jorge being gone. By Thursday, she was over him, pretty much.

Here I am avoiding starting to write the draft of my column by taking pictures of Zoe and me. I am so creative at postponing writing when I have writer's block.

I love how her head is cocked here.

Little Miss Emo.

Every time I would try to get my face next to hers for our "photo shoot," she would try to kiss me. Wow, bad breath (thus the pained expression on my face) but the sentiment behind it was sweet.

The Most Pitiful Picture of Zoe

Shot Day, 2009

The poor little thing had to have 3 shots. She never made so much as a whimper but only looked at me the entire time, never taking her eyes off of me.

You can see from this bandage that her leg is actually about as thick as one of your fingers. It's her hair that makes her look bigger than she really is.

Wish I could say that about myself.

She weighed 4 lbs., which means she lost a pound.

She is 7 years old, which is like 49 human years. I can claim 46 human years.

Irony: Even my middle aged dog can lose weight, but I can't seem to.

This is pathetic. I'm envying my dog's hair and weight.

Pop Goes the Starting Gun

*EDIT: We are now over 50 strong. Go us!

Fill in this blank: "Today is the first day of the rest of your ___."

" ... life?"

Nope.

Your two weeks.

Because that's all this is.

Sure, we know it takes a lifestyle change to effect big results in fitness or weight management goals, but we're sticking to two weeks for now. So unless you have the life cycle of a fruit fly, we're talking about a tiny piece out of your big, big life, and we're talking that way on purpose.

Because how do you eat an elephant? No, not sauteed in garlic butter with a sprinkle of lemon. You eat him one bite at a time. And that's how we're approaching change--in attainable, small increments.

Pin a rose upon our noses on this very momentous day, for we have "gotten a clue," like that great smart-lady feminine icon of the 20th Century, Jessica Fletcha.

We are doing this without pressure, without angst, without guilt and without Oprah, believe it or not.

I'm happy to report to you that I have indeed graced the elliptical machine already, thereby allowing myself to face you.

I also took some before pics of myself wearing shorts and a tank top in my bathroom so that I could share my progress with you visually, but then:

I got ANOTHER clue, which was this internal siren: "Are you crazy?? In those pics, you look like one of those trees that someone built a house around. In this case, they built a bathroom around you. DO NOT SHOW THOSE PICS."

I had better listen to my inner Jessica.

So there you have my first 30 x 5 report: 30 mins. on my elliptical this morning, with my little dog, Zoe, watching me. This is my view from the machine.

Just so you know, Zoe thinks I am absolutely wonderful on my elliptical. It's like I'm a rock star. If she could talk, she would be saying, "How are you so wonderful on that big thing? You are amazingly, incredibly wonderful. I cannot take my eyes off of your wonderfulness." But in the interest of full disclosure, she also does this when I go to the bathroom. That is, when I am on the throne, she worships at my feet, much to my chagrin.

So what is your 30 x 5 plan/report today?

Call Me Stupid; I Don't Really Care...Today is Her Birthday, My Little Zoe Bear

You must play the music as you view the pics. This is my plan. (Get your little ones; they might like these pics.)

Born: March 6, 2002

Not much bigger than a remote control

She has brought so much joy for such a little "package."

And even though her brain is the size of a walnut
,

she can still help with homework.

My yiddlest baybee: Happy Barkday!
