WFMW ~ The Lemon Option

You've probably heard the reports about restaurant lemons being loaded with bacteria. If you haven't, you can watch the 3-min. video below. This news really bugged me because I always order water with lemon. I used to feel so good about that healthy choice, until I learned what a world of germs restaurant lemons are. Veritable cesspools.

I can't do plain tap water in restaurants. And my co-worker always orders lemon in her Diet Coke. What are we to do?

Happily there is a product called True Lemon, which is a crystallized lemon or lime or orange substitute. They come in little packets just like artificial sweeteners, only they're not artificial, nor are they sweeteners. I lifted this list of info from the site:

Consistent fresh lemon or lime taste without any mess, waste or inconvenience;
100 percent all natural ingredients including fresh lemon or lime juices and oils;
0 calories and 0g carbohydrates;
No artificial or natural sweeteners;
No preservatives or sodium; and
Offers 25 percent of an adult’s daily Vitamin C requirements.

And I'm adding this: no salmonella or fecal matter. Blech.

You can even go to the site and request samples. And no, I'm not being paid in any way to endorse this product. I'm just saying "It Works for Me." As always, thanks to Shannon at Rocks in My Dryer for hosting.

The scary video:

One more reason to order a Dr. Pepper! Mind if I use that as an excuse next time I go out?

Oh, that's a great idea! My husband loves lemon in his tea... me too, but with that video going around, I stopped getting it. I haven't brought myself to watch it - just because... well, anyway, I love to eat out and don't think I would be able to after watching.
I'll get some and keep it handy!

EWWWWWWW!!!!! Gross. Yuck. I wonder what would happen if they just swabbed the rim of glasses in restuarants. Same dirty hands carrying the classes, and I've seen waiters carry two glasses in one hand my the rim.

My sister used to do waitressing and she said she's seen wait staff eat off of the plate BEFORE serving it, food fall in the floor, be picked up and put back on the plate - everything. Once she dropped a platter of burger buns (teenager yrs at burger joint) and then picked them all up and put them in the trash. The mgr yelled at her, picked them all OUT OF THE TRASH and then proceeded to serve them.

I would say just don't eat out - but then my family would starve. I say - we are building up a strong immune system by dosing ourselves with bits of bateria...similar to the flu shot. LOL!

I read about this some a few weeks back and was horrified. Sigh.

Such a wealth of information and good ideas you are.

Down south where I live one of our favorite choices of drink is sweet tea with lemon. I'm going to check into this true lemon thing! Thanks Linda.

it's not just lemons and limes. I now wash things like cantelopes and watermelons before I cut them. And what about that garnish sitting on your plate? Oh and here is the worst thing that is being done. Because so many people are wasteful, resturants are going through their trash and picking out unused sugar and condement packs. I know they aren't washing them.

I watched that and it has depressed me! I like several lemons in my water. Maybe I will start carrying my own lemons. That will be cute at the table!

I felt so violated when I found out about this lemon debacle! I bet if we knew how our food was prepared we'd all eat at home for the rest of our lives! I thank you for this tip; I think I will like it!

Oh have mercy...gross! I ordered a sample to try so thanks for the info! We always get lemon for our water when we eat out. I feel like going to brush my teeth now, but apparently even our toothbrushes are laden with germs. Ick!

Wow...to be number 4 to comment. That's rare, you popular girl you.

I am totally there with you. I do not like drinking plain water at restaurants. It's wierd..tastes funny or afraid it tastes funny. I don't do the lemons anymore either. Even with washed hands, I don't want someone's skin on my lemon and then drink it. Good gravy, that's too much to ask.

I'm going to go get a free sample of this.

Where do you buy it if indeed I like it? Walmart have it yet?

I too have heard the stories. I was introduced to the True Lemon/Lime thing some time ago & I agree - it's a good sub. Thanks for passing along the info and reminding me to put more on my shopping list.

It's times like this that I'm so thankful we're poor and watching our budget. We hardly ever eat out any more. I'll keep this in mind, though, the next time we do!

Thanks, Linda!

Ugh! That is disgusting!! Thankfully, I am Iced Tea drinker at restaraunts with NO lemons.

Kimmie said...

I hadn't heard of this. Thanks so much for sharing. Won't be asking for lemon with my water.

I got some of their samples and this stuff is GREAT!!

I am a total germophobe and quit using lemons in my water and tea. I have yet to find this in a store near me though.

And thanks for spoiling the lemon in my iced tea which I ALWAYS get whenever we eat out about 10 evenings a week because I didn't cook.
