Why Do People Try to Look All Pretty On Their Blogs? Down with Beauty! (Haircut Woes)

See this expression? It's the look of exasperation. I wanted to show you my new haircut because I kind of like it, which is nothing short of miraculous, but I had trouble getting a picture that I thought was presentable. It really does look better in person, I think.

Finally, in my frustration I said, "I have decided that I am ideologically opposed to objectifying myself in photos in order to attain the acceptance of bloggers 20 years younger than I am, and not just because I have realized the futility of such an endeavor, but because I refuse on principle alone."

Right. But it was a learning experience.

Lesson #1: When you have a round face, and you have put on a couple of pounds over the holidays, and you get a bob-like haircut, and you wear a turtleneck, you look like a gazing globe head:

Sadly, the gazing globe has a better waistline.

Lesson #2: As you age, your face slides down your face. Then you get extra doppelgangers under your jaw line:

But attempting to make your doppelganger chins defy gravity isn't really flattering, either, and it makes it really hard to see where you're going all day long:

Plus, when you wear a turtleneck and stick your neck out, you actually look like a turtle.

So finally I left to go to work, and it was snowing beautifully, and since I couldn't get anything but a freaky-deaky pic inside, I decided to throw all decorum to the wind, literally, and catch a snowflake.

Just sayin'.
WHY DO WE HATE OUR OWN PICTURES?

I hate all pictures of me! I do like you new hair style though. Very cute.

I've been vacationing from blogloand. I'd forgotten how funny you are. ;-Þ

Well, I happen to think they are all adorable...but the last one is GREAT!:)

Linda, the greater question is, "Why do people post pictures of themselves looking all pretty'd up and then say stuff like, 'Why do we hate our own pictures'"? I don't get it.
Nonetheless, I do have a very pretty'd up picture of moi HERE (that I hate becuase that's just what people do, right?) because I'M IN. . . . Yes, I am "IN" Despite my clumsy witticism and unkind reaction to the "UglyMugContest," I'm IN!!!!! You will also find HERE a lovely tribute to your "Ugly Mug Contest" and a public apology for making fun of your "Ugly Mug Contest." In case you missed it, it's HERE.

I don't ever recall trying to look all pretty... but my photo is a crazy cartoon lady so... :-p

"I have decided that I am ideologically opposed to objectifying myself in photos in order to attain the acceptance of bloggers 20 years younger than I am, and not just because I have realized the futility of such an endeavor, but because I refuse on principle alone."

and to that I say "whu? You be geniusness, me jr high" ;-)

I think your new hair cut suits you.

I am having the same problem with my drooping bits too! I try to be the person taking the photos nowadays.

I love the hair and think the pictures are adorable...but I get ya, I can't ever find a picture of myself that I love!

Kim said...

Just for the record, I think you're beautiful! And at least you have a fun TAKING the pictures. I posted a not-so-flattering pic of myself on my blog last night.

My daughter sent me a message via facebook, "Mom, that's GREAT!(re: info I'd put on there) But couldn't you have at least brushed your hair??"

I threw caution to the wind and just did it! It's very freeing!

Blessings!

Your haorcut and you look great.
I myself am totally the turtle.

My own mother even says thst I take horrible picture which is enough to make me run for the hills when someone even mentions camera.

Love the haircut!

And we are our own worst critics. Just like we're all saying "you look great", we only see the flaws.

As for me, I'm struggling with those ol' dopplegangers under the jaw too. And today I've got a couple of huge zits from all the stress I've had. Nothing like being menopausal and having teenage-appearing skin at the same time.

And you're worried about me having an ugly MUG?!

sara said...

Lid, you are so funny!!! I am sitting here laughing and then realizing, yep that's me!!

Great hair cut, but I love the snow pic!!!

Robin @ Be Still and Know said...

Why do we hate pictures of ourselves? Speaking for myself what I see in the mirror seems somehow exaggerated in all it's brilliance, the gray hair, the fact that the camera adds ten pounds, oh the horror of it all. My solution to the terrifying situation is to always be the photographer!

Manic Monday said...

down with doppelgangers!!! actually, i think they are why i hate my picture! your pixs look nice, your hair cut is cute and yes, i truly believe it does look better in person! have a great day!

The Quiet One said...

Once again you have me cracking up first thing in the morning! I absolutely abhor pictures of myself and I'm not sure why... actually I do know why! Anyway, love your pics and your haircut is Gorgeous! Happy Thursday! :)

Beverlydru said...

We are our own worst critics. I declare! (Now how's that for a southern descriptive term?) LOL

Smilingsal said...

All of your pictures show a charming personality attached to a beauty; my pictures show an old, fat lady. That's why I don't like my pictures. I KNOW I'm young and thin!

Dutch said...

Thanks for the laughs this morning. You really crack me up. I love the new haircut. I wish I could go that short but my face would look like a bowling ball with hair. lol Have a great day.

Diane said...

Your new haircut is very cute. I do know what you mean about pics as we get older. Always, always, always, I push to get in the back of the group...even though I'm 5'3". I would rather be on my tippy toes. We're always more critical of our own pics than others, though. I think all of yours posted were great!

Debbie said...

Love the waistline comment - probably because so many are better than mine - the gazing globe, mannequins, and yours!

Your hair is cute and I love the snow picture. I thought about trying to catch a flake when I left work yesterday but didn't want the teasing from the guy filled parking lot.

Susanne said...

Love your haircut. I totally hate pics of myself. And I have been known to do the doppleganger jutt myself.

Lorri said...

I love the new do! It's awesome!

Just wait ...I'm gonna take a picture of ME in a turtle neck, and you'll see someone who truly has no neck. :(

Happy Mama said...

hahaha
Linda, thank you for making me laugh again.
I don't think you realize how pretty you are, and a couple of extra pounds can't hide it.

Dena said...

Your haircut is adorable! It's actually how I would like mine, but during the summer when the natural curls take over, I'd end up looking like Annie, and that's not the look I'm going for.

Merrie said...

I have a rule... don't take pictures of "mama"! They always look like me (so they say) but they don't look like the image I have of myself.
I want to look young and thin and beautiful... my pictures "make" me look old and dumpy and frumpy!

Rach@In His Hands said...

Lady, you look gorgeous!

I really dislike how I look in pictures...I won't even tell you how many times we attempted to take our Christmas photo this year. My poor hubby.

Chatty Kelly said...

Okay, I am hysterically laughing! Ken Lee this post because it is so true...no, not that you take bad pictures, you are adorable. But true that we hate our own photos. I took a picutre of me that looked double chinish, so then I stretched out my neck and took another, adn I looked like a giraffe. Ah, life.

I also realized that I need to love my pictures...because the way I look now at 40 is probalby the best I will ever look. Since I'm on the downhill slope now. Egads.

Fran said...

You completely crack me up. I caught myself the other day in a picture sticking that dang neck out. Whatever. Why do we beat ourselves up so much over pictures?

I'm going to my hair wizard today. Should I take a picture? Nope, because as good as I feel and happy as she makes me....I'll see that stupid picture and get mad! Ha!!!

You are a mess. Love all that snow! Have a great day! I've missed popping in over here.
Love,
Fran

Jeanette said...

Thank you so much, I needed a good laugh today, and while I was laughing at your thoughts about yourself, I realized I was really laughing at myself. As our lives mature and we loose the elasticity of our skin, we become more flexible for those we have been given to love. So let us all welcome the doppelgangers drooping under our jaw line as we embrace our loved ones and the many responsibilities of womanhood! Here's to the turtleneck!!!

darla said...

we all relate to this...but the new haircut is very flattering!

Andrea said...

First of all, you are NOT 20 years older than me. By a long shot!

Secondly, you are gorgeous!

So there.

Sara@I.Sass said...

If we round faces truly do look like lawn globes, is it wrong that I want to go the whole way just so I can have THAT waist again?
Your pictures are lovely. Love the bangs...I'm wanting some, all I do is tuck tuck tuck the hair back, or pin it.
Love the picture of you outside, really fun, that's totally what I see you doing in the snow too!

RissaRoo said...

You are beautiful! And I love the pictures, especially the one where you are catching snowflakes. And I love your haircut. AND I completely understand where you are coming from about the pictures (notice how few pictures of me there on my blog? That is not an accident...)

You're so funny, thanks for the laugh and the honesty!

a Tonggu Momma said...

I like the new haircut. And, as to your question, I hate pictures of me because they actually look like me, not the gorgeous woman I pretend to be in my mind. Oh, reality... you are so cruel.

12-arrows said...

that was hilarious and I totally understand. Rarely and I mean rarely do I let anyone take my picture for some of those very reasons! I prefer totaly head shots only! thanks for making me smile!

skoots1mom said...

you're just too funny...
like Beverly said, we know the enemy and he is us!
my trick is to post only half my face...like you can't tell from the chipmunk cheeks, duh! oh well, i find it fun to share, even if i look bad to me.
love your hair...

I hate self photos too but I think yours is nice. Let me stick my neck out here( snicker) and say it is really nice. Seriously, it really is a nice haircut and photo. At least you weren't eating flies.

And this is why I don't have pictures of myself on my blog. Of course, in order to post one, I'd have to take one, which I do not.

Sarah@Life in the Parsonage said...

Freaky-deaky is going to be my new favorite word my friend...thanks to you!

I like the snow pic the best. You're stinkin' adorable, whether you see it or not. So there.

Lisa Laree said...

I like the new cut too! Cute!!!

And I hate pictures of me because they disagree with the mirror.

In the mirror, I see me. In pictures, I see my grandmother....

Rachel said...

Linda, you're gorgeous! The 20 somethings (myself included) should be hoping we look half as good as you when we get to be your age!

And I just have to say I'm not a coffee drinker and therefore I don't own an ugly mug, but if I WAS a coffee drinker and DID own an ugly mug, I would have SO participated in the Ugly Mug contest.

I think someone should start up a series of Ugly memes. I bet we could come up with some great stuff!

Merrie said...

Thanks for letting me know about my blog... I had redone it, but left the "old" in there and it had to go through several old settings before showing the "new" one... hope it works better now.

Laurie Ann said...

I hear you! I wanted to show off my new haircut last week and the before and after pics I posted were, ahem, grotesque. Still, I posted them so people would have a face to put with a name...I should have put up your beautiful gazing ball instead, LOL! Or the turtle!

Edwina at The Picket Fence said...

Linda, I like your hair. Girl, you have way too much time (j.k.) Your best pic is the one with the turtle :)

Julie said...

OK, Linda, so I took all these pictures to put on my blog of my more graying hair than is in the picture on there now. Plus I have a new haircut too and it's so hip for an old lady that I wanted to show it off.

But EVERY single picture looks horrible to me. Why is that? When I was looking in the mirror my hair looked good, my makeup looked good... I was happy.

And then I took the pictures and it was WHAT????

I kept asking my husband to take one standing up while I was sitting down. Then one of me standing up, then one straight on.... Didn't work...

SO I didn't put a one on there.

Yea, I have the dopplanger too and I try to stick my chin out to hide it and then I look like a chicken or something....

On top of that. I have the "menopause" pounds. You know the ones that your body puts on to prepare for the horrendous ride of menopause.
You gain 5 lbs. in DAY!!!

Next week I get my haircut again, maybe I'll try it a 2nd time. I wish you could have seen my husband trying to take my picture.... lol....

Becoming Me said...

You are beautiful!! And I'm not just typing that. I mean it. Cute cut too! Funny I read this today, I'm working on a similar post---not all that similar...but similar enough, with of course a mushy side because that's what I write best.

Julie said...

Linda, Wow, I didn't realize that I wrote a book in that last comment... As you can tell this subject hits me close to home!!!!

You're going to love this next statement. As my husband was taking my picture I kept saying, does my hair look flat on one side??? lol... Like HE would know.

You see we just need a personal photograph assistant. They can tell us if our dopplanger is doppling...or if our hair is flat on one side...etc...

LOL!!!

Brenda Susan said...

Love your new do! I shocked myself be putting an un-made up pic of myself in my header! I did it without thinking about it, and I would not have done that a year ago. It's nice to see growth, ya know? I love your snowflake pic a lot! You are a beauty!

marina said...

love the knew hair cut!! as always you have a beauitful personality and would look good in anything.

It's funny to me, reading this post. Because I've often thought, "wow, that Linda looks GOOOOD." And I'm not just saying that. I know you don't believe me (because I just read your post) but it's the TRUTH. You're looking good, pre-haircut and post-haircut.

Rock on. :)

You just got 55 comments on your haircut. What does that say about women?

Your hair is cute and you are such a goofball and I love ya' for it.

Girl, your popularity groweth. Now I have to hope that 55 comments later I get noticed! ;-)

You are bee-yoo-tee-ful and don't let anybody (i.e. yourself) tell you other wise.

And I came into the world with a chin collection...and I will probably leave with all of them still intact!

I started reading this innocently enough but by the end I was laughing so hard I couldn't see! Boy did that feel good!! I have been so sad watching my face "cave in" and "fall down" that I needed a good laugh about it. Thanks Linda, you have made my day!

Hi Linda,
I've been reading your comments on some of my friends' blogs and had to drop in and say hi.
This was such a funny post, and I know what you mean about seeing photos of self. At first I thought having a digital camera was going to be great coz you can just look at it right away and do-over, but the do-overs NEVER END. egads.

Alexia said...

Sooo funny! I have precious few photos of me for this exact reason! LOL

Sue J. said...

You have a sort of Mary Tyler Mooresqueness about you in that last shot....like "I don't care what you think of my hair because....well, I just don't (smile, toss cap--oh, wait, you're not wearing one!).

I'm getting my hair trimmed on Tuesday. Not cut, since I can't get a cut until my daughter's reaches a certain length so we can do a "Locks of Love"-type venture together. But, I may have to think about that global look--will it be warming or just framingly round?

Tune in later....

Kathryn Magendie said...

Laughing....the globe thing is cracking me up.

I am bad about posting unflattering photos of myself, of which I just did the other day. I figure, if I make myself look horrid, when people see me in person they'll go, "huhn, well, she's not so hideous after all!" instead of the other way around...haw!

Debbie said...

Girl. Look at you. 70 comments. That is great.
And I can't stand myself in turtlenecks anymore because my skin hangs down over the turtleneck.
