The One Wherein You Blow My Mind

I have just finished reading about half of the responses to this week's Random Dozen, and my mind is blown. First it reeled, then it blew. And that is a sentence I never thought I'd say.

I'm going to attempt to answer the questions now, but any hope of having a unique, interesting answer is shot because of your amazing answers.

You remember that old Paul Simon song, "Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover?" All I can think of now is "Fifty Ways to Eat a Peanut Butter Sandwich."

Also, many, many more of us have more creative ideas about how to watch a movie than we do about our own funerals.

Just think, God hears all of our random thoughts all the time, and it never freaks him out or wears him out.

How's that for random.

1. Tell me the absolute best way to watch a movie.

A) In a theater with my girlfriends.
B) At home, with closed captioning on. I'm hard of hearing. At home, I must also have something to do, like fold laundry. Can't just sit there, no matter how much I like the movie. Even a crossword will work.

2. Do you ever think about your own funeral? If so, do you have specific ideas about how you would like it to be?

My favorite answer to this one came from a brand new blogger: "Yes, a long time from now." That cracked me up. I happen to know this blogger in real life. Her name is Julie at Love Blossoms and you should go visit her (please?) and say hi. She is going to be a natural blogger. And she is a supremely nice, Christ-like person who is down to earth with a great sense of humor.

As for me and my answer, it is definitely yes. I have been planning it all of my adult life. It's the last chance to say anything to people. I'd like to be cremated, too. I never want people to remember how I looked dead; I want them to remember me laughing. I have some songs, etc. chosen. Gee. Do you think I should write my own eulogy?? Ha. That's a joke.

3. Are you more of a giver or a taker?

No, let me ask YOU a question (Whut?): What kind of person writes a meme question which she knows, if she herself answers honestly, will make her look bad?

I'm a taker. Seriously, I don't like that about myself. Some of it comes from being the baby of the family. Some of it comes from having an indulgent husband. You know those bumper stickers that say, "God isn't finished with me yet?" I need one on my forehead.

4. Vacations: planned activities and schedules, or play it by ear?

The last one was play it by ear, and now I have seen the light. The no plan is the best plan for me.

5. What is one FOUR often overlooked item in your home that needs to be cleaned regularly?

A) Windows
B) Vent at bottom of refrigerator
C) Cup in the middle of the washing machine for fabric softener
D) Insides of trash cans

6. Name a cause that means a lot to you.

Pro Life, whether the unborn or those unable to speak for themselves like Terri Schaivo
Fresh water to drink around the world

7. Do you eat a regular old peanut butter jelly sandwich, or do you customize it? And by the way, jelly or no jelly?

"Slip out the back, Jack. Make a new plan, Stan."
Uh, no. That's not it.
I LOVE peanut butter, as much as I love chocolate.
When I was little, my mom packed it every single day for lunch. With jelly.
I never met a peanut butter sandwich I didn't like.
Currently, I eat a low-fat version with no jelly.

8. If we were having a conversation in person, how would I know if you were nervous?

I have trouble with eye contact even when I'm not nervous. It's a defense mechanism. I guess it's "If I can't see you, you can't hurt me." So when I'm nervous, I hardly make it at all. And I pick at my cuticles.

9. Do you have an elaborate bedtime routine, or just the basics of tooth brushing and jammies?

Just the usual, except I do have to make sure I have tissues and a back scratcher nearby. I have terrible itchy back issues. Sometimes I bolt upright in the middle of the night and grab my PAINT STIRER off my nightstand and scratch like a maniac. It is the right length and texture. I've often wondered if I die if people will come into my home to get things in order and wonder about the paint stick on the nightstand. But if they really know me, they will just shrug their shoulders and get on with it.

10. Have you ever regretted something you wrote on your blog?

Yes, about a year into it (this is my fourth year) I wrote a scathing post on a guy named Barack Obama before hardly anyone knew who he was. I actually believe I coined the term "Obamination," but most people would not believe that. Then I decided I didn't want to be too political and removed it. After all, I reasoned, he's not a real threat; we would never elect somebody that liberal. And no one would ever pay for water in a bottle when it comes out your faucet, either.

11. Has anyone ever told you that you look like a famous person or celebrity? Did you agree?

Oh man. Yes.
A) Sandi Patti
B) Meryl Streep
C) Helen Hunt
D) A teacher at the high school, who is not famous, but tons of people are telling me this.

I think I resemble Helen Hunt a bit, but my yes are bigger. But I have Meryl's nose. So I think I'm kind of like Helen Streep. On a good day, Ted Koppel.

12. If you were going to dedicate a song to a loved one or friend, what would the song be and to whom would it be dedicated?

My heart is tender this week.

Matt Redman's You Never Let Go, for my friend, Jim.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
Your perfect love is casting out fear
And even when I’m caught in the middle of the storms of this life
I won’t turn back
I know You are near

And I will fear no evil
For my God is with me
And if my God is with me
Whom then shall I fear?
Whom then shall I fear?

Oh no, You never let go
Through the calm and through the storm
Oh no, You never let go
In every high and every low
Oh no, You never let go
Lord, You never let go of me

And I can see a light that is coming for the heart that holds on
A glorious light beyond all compare
And there will be an end to these troubles
But until that day comes
We’ll live to know You here on the earth

Yes, I can see a light that is coming for the heart that holds on
And there will be an end to these troubles
But until that day comes
Still I will praise You, still I will praise You

Comin' around to read the rest of you today. You're the BEST!

I am like you about TV. I can't just sit and watch. It wasn't allowed when I was a kid, so I get all antsy if I have nothing to do while watching. I used to embroider. Since I don't watch TV much any more I don't get much embroidery done, either.

i loved reading those, i laughed at the back scratcher tho...i have a similar thing i use, a metal utensil that you hold against a pan to strain water from the pot? it's kindof cresent moon shaped and just the right length. man, it's the best. my kids and hubby make so much fun of me! i say that a paint stir stick is a GREAT idea.

These are excellent. (Ted Koppel??!!) Great song to dedicated.

There is a little mention on Easy Street today. Stop by if you get the chance.

I hope you are feeling better. Happy Friday!

Wow! hadn't even THOUGHT of the insides of the trash cans... I am NOT going to even go LOOK at them. Garbage is a hubby/son duty so I am SURE they aren't clean inside. UGH...I should really probably go look... nope... not gonna do it...I'll tell hubby to! :)

I'm another who likes to have something else to do while watching t.v., a movie, whatever. I've found it's a great time to do any handwork needed on quilting projects. Along with those running commentaries I give :-)

I am still working my way through the list of people who linked up -- had less than an hour on the computer yesterday. At this rate it might take a while! By next week I'll finally be finished with this week's batch. LOL

But it's a LOT of fun and I'm having a blast reading everyone's answers. Thanks for hosting such a great meme!

AND CONGRATULATIONS on four years at this gig! Hope you're feeling better today too.

Yes I learned not to go political on my blog even though I have some definate thoughts in that area. I am willing to discuss them one on one though if anyone needs a good arugment. I vote for PB & P. Its the only way.

Love that Matt Redman song.

I have a hard time imagining you nervous and being a non eye contact person.

2. So is one of your songs the old "Burn, Baby, Burn"? :-)

5. Cheater. Why do you get to change it to FOUR?!

7. This was a dinner topic with my kids last night. Unbelievable how many different versions there are!

8. So if we ever meet, we'll never look at each other?!

9. Great idea. The other night I was reading and every other paragraph I had to lean forward to try to scratch the impossible-to-reach spot on my back.

11. You made me choke on my cereal.

12. Great song.

From the looks of this post, it appears the flu has flown. Hope you are all better.

You pick at your cuticles? Thank you for admitting that. I will pick at the skin beside my thumbnails until they bleed sometimes, when I am feeling agitated and trying to be controlled in a situation. My friend will sometimes grab my thumbs and look, just to make sure I'm not doing it. Apparently it's genetic because my mom does the same quirky thing.

Great answers!! As a fellow baby of the family (and over-indulged wife) I felt tingles at your answer to #3... my kindred spirit - hee hee

And to put your mind at ease... there is no way on earth, even on your worst day, you'll EVER look like Ted Koppel! lol

We drink bottled water because the water from our faucet isn't healthy- too hard (not good on kidneys) and too high in flouride (makes your kid's teeth brown.) So I get your cause for good water around the world. I never knew until now that we still needed it in the US.

Sandi Patty....what a throw back :) I would say no on that one. Helen Hunt is beautiful, and so are you :)

I do know how to Mr. Linky my post, there was an auto-fill when I clicked on it, and I apparently thought that my computer was genius...not so much ;)

"Cup in the middle of the washing machine for fabric softener"

You're supposed to clean that?

On 1.I also need closed captioning, and something to do with my hands, I need to learn to knitt.
On 3. I thought you were trying to make this blogger [EAT CROW] I didnt think of the ecuse of being the youngest and the only girl in the family. I feel better now.

Love it. I always enjoy reading these. I could comment on most all of these but will spare you and also be selfish and not go back to read and then type my comments. But I know you'll forgive me.

I had to laugh at the "cup in the middle of the washing machine". I just cleaned mine for the first time a year or so ago and I thought I would DIE at all the caked up fabric softener inside! So weird!!

I love your answers, Linda. And, by the way, that Matt Redman song is my favorite of his. Great job.

I do that TV thing too. I can´t just sit and watch. Either I have my laptop on or I´m reading, but just watch TV? No way! :)

Jewel said...

I get too easily distracted to doanything else while trying to watch a movie. :-/ If I am here at home and tried to do something else while watching, I'd end up having to constantly rewind and replay. I'd be forever! :-)
And you just had to remind me of two OTHER things that should be cleaned! Argh! LOL Have a great weekend!!

Marsha said...

Okay, okay, so I'm waaaaaaaaaaay too literal but it seems to me that you're eating a peanut butter sandwich... not PB&J! (grin) A quick aside... I do not like low-fat PB, although I've found many low-fat foods that I really enjoy.

As for being a taker, I think there's an art in being a grateful receiver and we can learn from you in this area... besides, someone has to be on the receiving end for all the givers in life. I've tried to explain to my mother over the years that she cheats people when she doesn't allow them to do nice things for her and that she needs to just learn to accept their kindness and say thank you.

Thanks for hosting this meme, it was fun. I've enjoyed reading several of the other commenter's answers and heading back out to read more.

We have closed captioning on 24/7 around here, even for tv. Leftover habit from when our first child was born and we'd watch the tv muted with the captions on while he slept. Second baby? TV is on at full volume but still love those captions!

Debbie @Like a Rose said...

I have trouble just watching the movie if I'm at home too.
Forgot all about the fabric softner cup - I should go clean that.
LOVE that song...

Melli said...

THAT is the song that God throws at me every time He wants me to walk on water! I absolutely LOVE it though - and He doesn't let go!!! What a great song to dedicate to your friend...

I don't SEE Sandi Patti in you... I do see the bit of Helen Hunt and Meryl Streep. I don't know the teacher... *shrug*

I have a kitchen salad fork that I use to scratch my back! You know - the loooong wooden ones! LOL! Someone once asked me why I don't just ask my husband... shoot! He would NEVER wake up! I'd die of itch before it got scratched!

I'm pretty behind on blog reading, so am using this Sat. a.m. and now close to p.m. to catch up.

The Random Dozen is definately a fun one. Thanks for hosting it.

I can see Helen Streep. I get the "God isn't finished with me yet" and too funny about what you said re. Obama.

Keep on the sunny side,

#3 too funny.
#5 I can honestly say, with much feeling, "Ditto."
#6 Excellent answer.
#8 This is a surprise to me! Maybe you just know me well enough in my mind that I don't see it. ha!
#9 Paint stirer...HAW!
#10 Sounds like it's time for a re-run.

Have a great day, Helen Streep! ha!

A paint stirrer back-scratcher! Well that certainly is different :)
